Importing from China question

Question from one of our subscribers:

I wondered if someone could help. I’ve looked through various threads about import tax and just can’t find the answer I need. I’ve googled the hell out of it but still to no avail.

I have set up a small business selling hair accessories on ebay and importing them from china. When I received them they had been marked as “gift” with a very low value so I was not charged at customs. I know this is my responsibility and would like to pay the vat on my imports so all my transactions are above board and I cannot be accused of tax evasion. I have just placed another order and asked them to not mark it as a gift and to declare the correct value on the parcel but I have no faith this will happen. They just keep saying I should not be charged at customs for a small parcel.

I would like to keep buying from them as I love the products but I want to do it all legally. Is there a way I can receive the parcels and then declare them myself so I can pay tax?

Any advise would be great. I just don’t seem to be able to find answers.

Answer:

Hi!

Congratulations on your business!

DHL, FEDEX, UPS, and other carriers will help you declare taxes. What you only need to do is pay them for their services.

Hope this helps and good luck on your business!
